Quick Answer

The Navamsa or D9 chart divides each sign into nine equal parts of 3°20' each, and it is the second most important chart after your main birth chart (D1). It is mainly used to judge marriage prospects, the true strength of a planet, and later-life or spiritual matters. A planet that looks weak in D1 but is well placed in D9 often still delivers good results, and vice versa.

What is the Navamsa (D9) chart

Navamsa means "ninth division." Every 30-degree sign in your main chart is split into nine parts of 3°20' each, and each part is called a navamsa. Where your planets fall inside these tiny divisions decides your D9 placements, which form a fresh chart of twelve houses, just like your D1.

Vedic astrology treats D9 as a confirmation chart. If a planet is strong in D1 and also strong in D9, its results are considered solid and lasting. If a planet looks strong in D1 but falls in a weak sign in D9, its promise often does not fully materialise, especially for marriage and long-term commitments.

The D9 lagna (ascendant) is read almost like a second birth chart for your inner life, your spouse's nature, and how your fortunes mature after your mid-thirties. It is one of the sixteen divisional charts (shodasha varga) but the one astrologers check most often after D1.

How we calculate your D9 chart

  1. 1

    Take your birth data

Date, time and place of birth, needed for accurate sidereal (Lahiri ayanamsa) planet positions.

  2. 2

    Compute exact planet degrees

We work out precise longitudes for the Sun, Moon and all planets, down to minutes and seconds.

  3. 3

    Apply the Navamsa division

Each 3°20' slice of a sign is mapped to its Navamsa sign, following the standard classical scheme.

  4. 4

Show the D9 chart with a read

You get the D9 lagna, each planet's D9 sign and house, and a plain-English note on strength and what it means for marriage and later life.

Who is this for?

  • Anyone curious about their true marriage prospects
  • People whose D1 chart looks confusing on relationships
  • Students of Vedic astrology learning divisional charts
  • Anyone preparing for kundli matching who wants the D9 view too
  • People wanting to know if a planet's promise is likely to actually deliver

A real example: checking a marriage question through D9

A user asked whether her upcoming engagement would hold. Her D1 7th house looked unremarkable, ruled by Mercury placed in the 3rd house, nothing dramatic either way. Her D9 chart told a clearer story: the D9 lagna came out as Scorpio, and Jupiter, the natural significator of marriage, sat in her D9 7th house in its own sign-friendly placement. She was also entering a Jupiter Antardasha within her running Mahadasha. Taken together, the D9 strength plus the Jupiter period pointed to this being a reasonably stable window for the relationship, not just a hopeful guess.

The lesson is the one classical astrology keeps repeating: never judge marriage from the D1 7th house alone, check the D9 placement of the same house and its lord before drawing a conclusion.

Who checks the D9 calculation logic

This calculator is built by the AstroFuture AI team at BEONE DEAL. Planetary longitudes come from the Swiss Ephemeris with Lahiri ayanamsa, and the navamsa division follows the classical Parashari scheme, not a simplified shortcut. Every update to the divisional chart logic is checked against established astrology software before it reaches users, so your D9 sign for a given planet matches what a professional astrologer's software would show.

What D9 does not tell you

A strong D9 placement does not guarantee a specific marriage date, and a weak one does not guarantee the relationship fails. D9 describes quality and durability, not timing, timing still comes from your Dasha periods and transits. D9 also depends entirely on an accurate birth time, since it is calculated from the same planetary degrees as your D1, just divided further, so a wrong birth time distorts D9 at least as much as it distorts D1.

A worked example: Venus in D1 versus D9

Say Venus sits at 27° Taurus in your D1 chart, in your 7th house, looking strong since Venus rules and occupies a friendly sign. Taurus spans 0° to 30°, so 27° falls in the ninth navamsa of Taurus, which maps to Virgo. Venus is debilitated in Virgo.

So while your D1 might suggest an easy, comfortable partnership, the D9 placement in Virgo warns of over-analysis, criticism or delay in the relationship actually settling. An astrologer reading both charts together would flag this gap and suggest patience and clear communication rather than assuming the D1 promise alone tells the full story.

Reading the D9 lagna itself

Beyond individual planets, the sign rising in your D9 chart (the D9 lagna) matters on its own. If your D1 lagna is Aries but your D9 lagna comes out as Cancer, your inner emotional nature and how you behave inside close relationships can feel noticeably different from your outward D1 personality.

We list your D9 lagna clearly in the chart output along with a short note on what that sign typically means for temperament in marriage and partnership, so you are not left guessing what a bare sign name implies.
