In Vedic astrology, the Lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the precise moment of birth. Because the Earth rotates, a new sign rises roughly every two hours, meaning your Lagna is far more time-sensitive than your Sun sign or even your Moon sign.

The Lagna sign becomes your 1st house, and every other house in your chart, 2nd through 12th, is counted forward from it. This means your entire house structure, and therefore where every planet lands house-wise, depends entirely on getting the Lagna right. Two people born on the same day in the same city but two hours apart can have completely different charts because of this shift.

The Lagna is traditionally read as describing your physical body, general temperament, and how you present yourself to the world, distinct from your Moon sign which describes your emotional mind.
