Sidereal Birth Chart Calculator (Lahiri Ayanamsa)
A sidereal chart uses the real, current position of the constellations, not the tropical zodiac most Western apps default to. Get a free preview below.
Quick Answer
A sidereal birth chart measures planetary positions against the actual, currently visible zodiac constellations, corrected for the slow precession of the Earth's axis using an ayanamsa. Vedic astrology uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, roughly 24 degrees, which shifts your ascendant, moon sign and planetary house placements compared to a tropical Western chart for the same birth data.

What a sidereal chart actually measures
Every birth chart starts from the same raw data, your exact birth date, time and place, and the same physics, where the Sun, Moon and planets actually were in the sky at that moment. Where sidereal and tropical charts diverge is the reference frame used to describe those positions.
A tropical chart measures from the Sun's position at the spring equinox, fixed to the seasons regardless of where the stars have actually drifted to. A sidereal chart measures from the actual constellations, corrected using an ayanamsa, because Earth's axis wobbles slowly over roughly 26,000 years, a cycle called precession. Vedic astrology has always used the sidereal approach, with Lahiri (also called Chitrapaksha) as the ayanamsa followed by Indian government panchangs.

Sidereal vs tropical: why the numbers move
The gap between the sidereal and tropical zodiac, called the ayanamsa, grows by roughly 50 arcseconds a year and currently sits around 24 degrees. Practically, that means a sidereal placement is usually shifted back by about one zodiac sign compared to its tropical counterpart for the same exact birth data. This is not a disagreement about where the planets are, both systems agree on that, it is a disagreement about which fixed reference point to measure from.
See our full Vedic vs Western astrology comparison for when each system is traditionally used, and why Vedic astrology leans on the sidereal frame specifically for Dasha timing.
Why birth time matters more for the ascendant than for the Moon
The ascendant moves through roughly one sign every two hours, so even a 20-30 minute error in birth time can shift your 1st house sign and, with it, every house-based reading downstream. The Moon moves far slower, roughly one sign every two and a quarter days, so it tolerates a less precise birth time far better. If your only goal is your sidereal moon sign, use the dedicated moon sign calculator; if you need the ascendant specifically, use the Lagna calculator with the most accurate time you have.
What this free preview does not replace
This browser-based calculator gives a quick, honest estimate of your ascendant, moon sign and nakshatra. It estimates your local time zone from the coordinates you select rather than looking up historical time-zone records, which can matter for births before standard time zones were adopted locally, or right at a boundary change. For a chart you would want to rely on for marriage matching, career Dasha timing or any decision with real stakes, use the full free kundli engine, which applies the complete Swiss Ephemeris calculation.
