Your Vedic moon sign, or Rashi, is decided by where the Moon actually sat in the sky at your birth. Enter your details below for a free, no-login estimate.

Quick Answer

Your Vedic moon sign (Rashi) is the sidereal zodiac sign the Moon was passing through at your exact birth time and place. It is calculated using the Lahiri ayanamsa, which shifts the zodiac back by about 24 degrees from the tropical zodiac most Western apps use. That shift is why a moon sign calculator built for Vedic astrology often gives a different sign than a Western app, even for the same birth details.

What is a Vedic moon sign (Rashi)?

In Vedic astrology, your Rashi is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment you were born, measured against the sidereal zodiac rather than the tropical one. The Moon moves fast, roughly one sign every two and a quarter days, so getting the sign right needs your actual birth date and, ideally, your birth time if you were born close to a sign change.

Vedic astrology treats the moon sign as more central than the sun sign for day-to-day personality and emotional temperament. Daily and monthly horoscopes in Indian newspapers and panchangs are usually written by Rashi, not by Western sun sign, which is a common source of confusion for people used to Western horoscope columns.

  • Anyone about to get a kundli made and wanting to check their Rashi first

Why your Vedic moon sign can differ from a Western moon sign app

Most Western astrology apps calculate your moon sign using the tropical zodiac, which is fixed to the seasons and does not account for the slow wobble of the Earth's axis, called precession. Vedic astrology corrects for this wobble using an ayanamsa, a specific offset, and the most widely used one in India is Lahiri, currently around 24 degrees.

That 24-degree offset means the Moon, measured sidereally, is usually sitting in the sign just before the one a tropical calculation would give you. If a Western app says your moon sign is Taurus, your Vedic Rashi is very often Aries. Near the edge of a sign, the gap can occasionally be two signs rather than one, so if your birth time is close to either boundary, use an exact time rather than a rough guess.

For a deeper look at this difference, see our Vedic vs Western astrology comparison and our dedicated sidereal sign calculator if you want to check your sun sign the same way.

Moon sign vs Lagna (ascendant): which one matters more?

The moon sign describes your emotional mind, instincts and the way you react privately. The Lagna, or ascendant, describes temperament and how the world sees you, and it changes roughly every two hours rather than roughly every two days. If you want your rising sign specifically, use our Lagna calculator, which needs an accurate birth time far more than the moon sign does.

How this stays accurate without asking for an account

The calculator above runs the same ephemeris-based Moon longitude math our full kundli engine uses, just scoped down to a quick result, directly in your browser. It estimates your local time offset from the coordinates you pick, which is accurate for most cases but not a substitute for a professionally cast chart if your birth time is uncertain or you were born right at a time-zone boundary.
