Vimshottari Dasha Calculator: How It Really Works
Vimshottari Dasha splits your life into 9 planetary periods over 120 years. Here is the real Moon Nakshatra formula behind every calculator, and how to read MD-AD-PD.
Where your Dasha sequence comes from
Vimshottari runs on a 120-year cycle split between nine planets: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17. The order never changes, only your entry point does.
That entry point is the Nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth, which is why the True Moon position matters so much. A Moon a few minutes off can shift the Nakshatra, and with it your entire Dasha timeline by years. We calculate with True Moon for exactly this reason.
Mahadasha sets the theme, Antardasha delivers the event
A Mahadasha describes the decade-scale subject of your life: expansion under Jupiter, restructuring under Saturn, ambition and shortcuts under Rahu. It rarely produces a single dated event by itself.
Events cluster in the Antardasha, and land precisely in the Pratyantardasha inside it. Reading all three layers together, Mahadasha for the theme, Antardasha for the window, Pratyantardasha for the month, is how a marriage, job change or property purchase gets an actual date instead of a vague year.
Judging a Dasha before it starts
Strength decides tone. The same Saturn Mahadasha is a promotion engine for a Capricorn Lagna with Saturn in the 10th, and a grinding period for a Cancer Lagna with Saturn in the 6th. Check house ownership, placement, aspects, and whether the planet is a functional benefic for your Lagna.
Then overlay transits. A supportive Dasha with Saturn crossing your natal Moon still feels heavy, and a difficult Dasha with Jupiter over the 5th or 11th still produces good news. Dasha plus Gochar together is the reading, either one alone is half the picture.
