Daily Panchang Guide: Tithi, Nakshatra, Rahu Kaal and Choghadiya

Aashish MalikUpdated 5 October 20269 min read

The daily Panchang is built from five elements: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (the Moon's star at that time), Yog (a specific Sun-Moon angular combination), Karan (half a Tithi), and Var (the weekday). Together with Rahu Kaal and Choghadiya windows, these determine which hours of the day are considered auspicious or inauspicious for different activities.

Every important decision in traditional India, travel, purchase, marriage, contract signing, court appearance, was made after checking the Panchang. The habit fell out of urban life but the logic behind it still holds. Five daily elements tell you what any given day genuinely supports, and once you know how to read them, a two-minute check replaces guesswork.

The 5 daily elements

  1. Tithi, the lunar day, running 1 to 15 in each of the waxing and waning phases.
  2. Nakshatra, the star the Moon is transiting through that day.
  3. Yog, the combined Sun-Moon position, 27 yogas in total.
  4. Karan, half of a Tithi, 11 karans in the cycle.
  5. Var, the weekday, each ruled by one planet.

How to read Panchang for yourself, not just generically

A Panchang tells you what the day supports in general, but your personal chart decides how strongly it applies to you. Check your Moon sign and Nakshatra first with a free Kundli online report, then see whether the day's Nakshatra is friendly, neutral, or challenging to your birth Nakshatra. A generically "good" day can still be weak for you personally if it falls in your Vedha or Tara Dosha Nakshatra from your Janma Nakshatra.

Rahu Kaal, the daily 90-minute window to avoid

DayApproximate Rahu Kaal
Monday7:30 - 9:00 AM
Tuesday3:00 - 4:30 PM
Wednesday12:00 - 1:30 PM
Thursday1:30 - 3:00 PM
Friday10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Saturday9:00 - 10:30 AM
Sunday4:30 - 6:00 PM

Local sunrise and sunset shift these windows, so use the exact daily Panchang for your city rather than a fixed table when timing something important. Avoid starting new work, making purchases, or beginning travel during Rahu Kaal.

Choghadiya, 8 auspicious or inauspicious slots

Amrit, Shubh, and Labh are auspicious for starting new work. Char is neutral and good for travel. Rog, Kaal, and Udveg are best avoided for new starts. Every day and night is divided into 8 Choghadiya windows, and traditional shopkeepers still open on Shubh and close on Kaal in many towns.

Panchang for muhurat decisions

Weddings, Griha Pravesh, and business launches all lean on the same five elements plus a few extra checks specific to the event. See our detailed marriage muhurat 2026 guide and Griha Pravesh muhurat 2026 guide for how these rules apply to specific life events, layered on top of the daily Panchang basics here.

What to avoid on any day

  • Avoid Amavasya and Chaturdashi for launching a new business.
  • Avoid Bhadra Karan for auspicious ceremonies, it is considered inauspicious across most traditions.
  • Avoid starting travel or new work during Rahu Kaal or Yamaganda Kaal.
  • Avoid signing major contracts during a Rog or Kaal Choghadiya slot.
  • Avoid Vishti Karan (a form of Bhadra) for weddings and Griha Pravesh.

Remedies and next steps

  • Check the Panchang before major decisions, it takes two minutes daily.
  • Avoid Rahu Kaal for anything you are starting fresh.
  • Prefer Shubh, Amrit, or Labh Choghadiya for signing contracts.
  • Wear the weekday-appropriate colour for important meetings.
  • Avoid Amavasya and Chaturdashi for new business launches.
  • Use Purnima, the full Moon, for meditation and spiritual work rather than transactions.

Panchang frequently asked questions

Do I need to check the Panchang every single day? Only for decisions that matter, travel, big purchases, signing contracts, starting new work. Routine daily life does not need a Panchang check. Is Rahu Kaal the only thing to avoid? No, Yamaganda Kaal and a Rog or Kaal Choghadiya slot matter too, Rahu Kaal is simply the most well-known of the inauspicious windows.

A real example

A client wanted to sign a property deal on a date that looked fine on a generic calendar app. Checking the actual Panchang for that day showed it fell in a Kaal Choghadiya slot in the afternoon with Rahu Kaal overlapping the originally planned signing time. We shifted the appointment two hours earlier into a Labh Choghadiya window instead, same day, same property, just a different two-hour slot, and the paperwork went through without the usual last-minute hiccups he had experienced on previous deals.

What this can't tell you

A good Panchang window cannot guarantee a deal closes or a trip goes smoothly, it only removes one layer of timing-based friction. The due diligence on the actual contract or purchase still has to be done properly regardless of the day chosen.
