Griha Pravesh is the one ceremony where people happily spend lakhs on the house and then pick the date from a random WhatsApp forward. The muhurat rules are not complicated, and knowing them saves you from moving into a new home on a day that classical texts specifically warn against. Here is the 2026 picture, plus the vidhi, common mistakes and realistic costs.

The three types of Griha Pravesh

  • Apoorva: first entry into a newly built house on fresh land. The full ceremony applies here.
  • Sapoorva: returning to your own house after a long absence, travel or a rental gap.
  • Dwandwah: re-entry after repair, renovation, fire or any damage-driven rebuild.

Apoorva needs the strictest muhurat. Sapoorva and Dwandwah can be done on lighter auspicious days, and in a genuine emergency, a Ganesh puja plus kalash sthapana is accepted.

Griha Pravesh 2026 muhurat months

Muhurat availability is driven by three things: the Hindu month, whether Jupiter or Venus is combust, and Chaturmas. In 2026 the workable windows are:

PeriodStatusNotes
January to mid MarchGoodMagha and Phalguna months, among the most recommended for Griha Pravesh.
Mid March to AprilMixedChaitra is generally avoided for Apoorva Griha Pravesh. Vaishakha from late April is excellent.
May to mid JuneVery goodVaishakha and Jyeshtha, classically strong months, subject to Guru and Shukra asta checks.
Mid July to early NovemberAvoidChaturmas. Devshayani Ekadashi to Devuthani Ekadashi. Only emergency or Dwandwah entries.
Mid November to DecemberGoodAfter Devuthani Ekadashi, Kartik and Margashirsha reopen the season.

Within an approved month, your Vedic astrologer still has to pick the actual day and hour. Do not lock a date from a table alone, including this one. Ask for the Tithi, Nakshatra and Lagna being used, and confirm it against your own chart.

What makes a day genuinely auspicious

  • Nakshatra: Rohini, Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Phalguni, Uttarashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati and Dhanishtha are the standard Griha Pravesh stars.
  • Tithi: Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Trayodashi. Avoid Amavasya, Purnima, Chaturthi, Navami and Chaturdashi. See the Amavasya 2026 dates so you do not book one by accident.
  • Weekday: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are preferred. Tuesday is avoided, Saturday and Sunday are used only with a strong Nakshatra.
  • Lagna: a fixed sign rising, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius, is preferred for stability.
  • Avoid entirely: Guru asta and Shukra asta (combust Jupiter or Venus), Kharmas or Malmas, Adhik Maas, Shraddh Paksha, and eclipse days.
  • Personal check: the day should not fall in your Ashtama Chandra, the eighth Moon from your Janma Rashi. Check your Moon sign in the free Kundli tool.

Griha Pravesh vidhi, step by step

  1. Clean and purify: wash the house, sprinkle gangajal with a mango leaf in every room.
  2. Toran and rangoli: mango or ashoka leaf toran at the main door, rangoli at the threshold.
  3. Kalash: the woman of the house carries a copper or brass kalash filled with water, rice, a coin and a coconut, entering right foot first.
  4. Ganesh Puja: always first, to remove obstacles.
  5. Navagraha Shanti: recommended when the chart shows planetary stress. Details in the Navagraha Shanti guide.
  6. Vastu Shanti Havan: the core ritual, a homa to the Vastu Purusha, done in the northeast or the designated puja space.
  7. Boil milk: milk boiled until it overflows in the new kitchen, symbolising abundance. Cook the first meal the same day.
  8. Anna daan: feed the Vedic astrologer and at least a few guests, or donate food. Do not skip this part.

Samagri list

Haldi, kumkum, akshat (unbroken rice), supari, coconut, mango leaves, banana leaves, panchamrit, gangajal, ghee, camphor, incense, cotton wicks, a copper or brass kalash, red cloth, flowers and garlands, fruits, mishri or sweets, havan samagri, mango wood, and a Ganesh idol or picture. Most Vedic astrologer packages include this, confirm before you buy separately.

Realistic cost in India

PackageTypical costWhat you get
Simple puja, 1 Vedic astrologerRs 2,500 to 5,000Ganesh puja, kalash sthapana, 1 to 2 hours
Standard with Vastu Shanti HavanRs 7,000 to 15,0002 Vedic astrologers, havan, samagri, 3 to 4 hours
Full with Navagraha ShantiRs 18,000 to 40,000Multiple Vedic astrologers, extended havan, half day

Metro rates run higher, small town rates lower. Anyone quoting six figures for a standard Griha Pravesh is selling you fear, not ritual. Duration is typically 2 to 4 hours, best started in the morning so the havan and first meal finish before sunset.

Common Griha Pravesh mistakes I see every season

  • Booking the date before checking Guru or Shukra asta. A Vedic astrologer's calendar app often does not flag combustion. Ask specifically.
  • Ignoring the personal Ashtama Chandra check. A generally good Panchang day can still be a bad day for your specific Moon sign.
  • Skipping anna daan because guests already ate at the function. The daan is a separate act, not the same as feeding your visitors.
  • Doing Griha Pravesh and a housewarming party on different days without a sankalp for either. The ritual date is the one that counts astrologically, the party date does not need a muhurat.
  • Trusting a single online muhurat generator without a human check. Automated tools often miss Chaturmas edge dates and regional Panchang differences.

Renting vs buying: does the muhurat change?

The rules do not change based on ownership. A rented house that you are entering for the first time is still Apoorva for you, even though someone else owned or built it. What changes is the depth of the ceremony people typically choose, most renters do a simple Ganesh puja and kalash sthapana rather than a full Navagraha Shanti, since the tenancy itself is temporary. If you plan to stay several years, I still recommend the standard Vastu Shanti Havan rather than skipping straight to the lightest option.

Vastu checks worth doing before you move

The muhurat handles timing, Vastu handles the space. Before the entry date, check the main door direction, the kitchen position, the toilet placement and the northeast zone. Our Vastu and planets guide maps each direction to a planet, and the in-app Vastu compass lets you check your own layout without hiring anyone.

What if you cannot wait for the ideal muhurat

Sometimes possession dates or loan disbursement do not cooperate with the calendar. If you must move in before a proper Apoorva muhurat is available, do a simple Ganesh puja and kalash sthapana on moving day, keep living in the house, and schedule the full Vastu Shanti Havan for the next available good date, ideally within a few weeks. This is an accepted practice, not a shortcut that voids the ritual, and most Vedic astrologers will confirm the same. Griha Pravesh muhurat 2026 dates, quick answer

If you only want the shortest possible answer to "griha pravesh muhurat 2026 dates": aim for January to mid-March, late April to mid-June, or mid-November to December. Avoid mid-July to early November entirely, that is Chaturmas, and no Apoorva Griha Pravesh should be booked in that window regardless of what a generic online muhurat generator shows you.

A real example

A family moved into their new flat on a date picked because it was a public holiday, without checking the Nakshatra. It turned out to fall during a Bhadra period, specifically flagged against in classical texts for Griha Pravesh. They redid a short shanti puja a week later on a proper muhurat date and reported feeling noticeably more settled, for whatever that is worth beyond psychological comfort. Pick a date from the list above and book a Vedic astrologer for your Griha Pravesh rather than defaulting to a convenient weekend.

What this can't tell you

A muhurat date cannot guarantee good fortune in the house by itself, Vastu, the direction of the main door, and how the family actually lives in the home matter just as much as the entry date.
