Quick Answer

Panchang means five limbs: tithi (lunar day), nakshatra (Moon's star), yoga (Sun and Moon combined), karana (half tithi) and vara (weekday). Together with sunrise, sunset and Rahu Kaal they describe what a day supports. All five are computed from the Moon and Sun positions at sunrise.

The five limbs, in plain language

Tithi is the lunar day: the Moon gaining 12 degrees on the Sun. Thirty of them make a lunar month, fifteen waxing (Shukla) and fifteen waning (Krishna). Tithi drives festivals, fasts and most muhurat rules.

Nakshatra is the Moon's star out of 27. Yoga adds the Sun and Moon longitudes and divides by 27 again, giving a quality to the day as a whole. Karana is half a tithi, eleven of them cycling through the month, and is used for finer timing. Vara is the weekday with its planetary lord, which is what sets Rahu Kaal and the Choghadiya order.

Why panchang is local, not national

The panchang day traditionally begins at sunrise, not midnight. Sunrise in Kolkata is about 40 minutes ahead of Mumbai, so a tithi that changes in that gap belongs to different calendar days in the two cities. This is why two almanacs can genuinely disagree about a festival date, and neither is wrong.

The table above resolves that by computing sunrise for the city you choose and reading the five limbs at that instant.

Reading the percentages

Each limb shows how far it has progressed at sunrise. A tithi at 90 percent will end early in the day and the next one takes over; a tithi at 10 percent will hold all day. For fasting and festival questions, this is the number that matters, because the rule is usually about which tithi is running at a specific point in the day, such as sunrise or moonrise.

Where panchang ends and your chart begins

Panchang describes the day for everyone. It cannot tell you whether today is good for your job interview, because that depends on your Lagna, your running Dasha and where transits are landing in your houses. A generally auspicious day inside a difficult Antardasha still behaves like the Antardasha.

A real example: reading a full panchang line by line

Suppose today's table shows Shukla Panchami at 65 percent elapsed, Nakshatra Hasta, Yoga Shobhana, Karana Balava, and Vara Thursday ruled by Jupiter. Read together: Panchami favours small new starts, Hasta is a craft-and-skill star good for close, careful work, Shobhana adds a generally pleasant tone, and Thursday's Jupiter rulership supports learning, finance and teaching-related activity.

The 65 percent elapsed matters for anyone fasting or observing a Panchami-specific ritual: the tithi will end before the next sunrise, so a rule tied to "Panchami at sunrise" would need tomorrow's table checked too if the percentage were close to 100.

Who calculates this panchang

AstroFuture AI is built by the BEONE DEAL team. The five limbs here come from Sun and Moon longitudes computed with the Swiss Ephemeris and the Lahiri ayanamsa, the same engine behind the birth chart tools on this site, not a static table copied from a printed calendar. We check tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana boundaries against standard panchang software whenever the calculation logic changes.

What a daily panchang will not settle for you

It describes the calendar day, not your personal suitability for an event on that day. Festival and fasting dates can also genuinely differ between regional traditions and local sampradayas, so for a specific ritual, your family's own custom or a local priest's guidance should take precedence over any general table, including this one.
