Vastu Shastra and Vedic Planets: Kundli Directions Guide

Vastu without your Kundli is guesswork. Two families live in the exact same NE-facing flat, one prospers and one falls sick. The difference is not the floor plan, it is which planets in each person's D1 chart rule that direction and whether those planets are strong or afflicted. In consults over the last twelve years I keep seeing the same pattern, so this guide walks you through reading Vastu the way an astrologer actually does it, room by room, planet by planet, from your own North Indian chart.

Why Vastu and Vedic astrology are the same conversation

Every Vastu direction has a ruling planet, and every planet in your D1 owns karakas (family members, body parts, life areas). When a room disturbs a direction, it disturbs that planet in every chart living inside. But the person whose chart already has that planet weak, combust, debilitated or sitting in the 6th, 8th or 12th, feels the hit ten times harder. How to read your North Indian D1 chart for Vastu (5 steps)

1. Note your Lagna sign in the top diamond of the chart.
2. For each of the 9 planets, note the house number it sits in and its rashi.
3. Circle any planet that sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, or is combust, debilitated, or aspected by two malefics. That is your afflicted planet.
4. Look up each afflicted planet in the grid above. That direction of your house is your leaking direction.
5. Cross-check the room in that direction against the room-by-room section below. That is where 80% of your real Vastu dosha lives.

Room by room, decoded by planet and house

Bathroom and toilet

Safe zones are NW, W, and south of SW. Never place a toilet in NE, E or SE. A toilet in NE flushes Jupiter, so wealth stored, children's studies and the guru's blessings all leak. If your D1 has Jupiter in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or Jupiter combust, this becomes severe. Common symptoms in consults are pancreatic issues, fatty liver, delayed marriage of children, and money that never quite stays. A toilet in E hits Sun, so the father's health, authority at work, and heart or bone problems for the male head. SE toilet hits Venus, so the wife's kidneys, hormonal cycles and the couple's financial harmony.

Kitchen

SE is the correct kitchen. It is Venus with Mars-Agni, the classical fire zone. A NE kitchen creates a Jupiter-Venus clash, the wife's digestion and the family's savings both suffer. A NW kitchen burns the Moon, so the mother of the house carries insomnia, BP and mood swings. If your D1 has Venus in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or Moon-Mars conjunct in the 6th, and your kitchen is misplaced, expect the pattern to show up within one Antardasha cycle.

Master bedroom

SW is the anchor bedroom for the head of the family, it is Rahu's zone and grants stability precisely because Rahu holds karma there. NE as master bedroom is the most common mistake I see. It burdens Jupiter, produces chronic indecision, insomnia and a quiet guru dosha even in otherwise clean charts. Rahu in your 4th or 7th, Moon in 6th 8th or 12th, or Saturn in 4th, all amplify a bad bedroom direction.

Children's room

W or NW work best because Moon and Mercury handle the growing mind. Check your 5th lord in D1. If the 5th lord is afflicted, or Mercury sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or Jupiter is in the 12th, the wrong direction here shows as poor concentration, anxiety and lost school years.

Pooja room

NE only. Any other direction weakens the daily prayer routine. If your 9th lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or Jupiter is combust or debilitated, a wrongly placed pooja room turns a spiritual dryness into a real one, prayers feel mechanical, mantras do not stick.

Study or home office

E or N. Face east while working if the room allows. Weak Mercury or an afflicted 2nd or 5th lord makes wrong direction here show up as brain fog and career stagnation.

Main door and entrance

Whichever direction your main door faces, that direction's ruling planet becomes the de facto lord of your household. An east-facing door with a weak Sun in D1 (in Libra, combust, or in 6/8/12) means the male head of family struggles to lead. A north-facing door with strong Mercury blesses cash flow. Use the grid table above and match to the strongest, best-placed planet in your D1 for the door direction you can practically get.

Staircase, septic tank, water tank, cash locker, mirror

Staircase, S or W, never NE. Septic tank, NW or W only, never NE or centre. Overhead water tank, SW is heaviest, place it there. Underground water source, NE. Cash locker, north wall opening south (Kuber faces north), the locker itself against a solid south or SW wall. Mirrors on north or east walls only, never facing the bed, and never in the south wall (bounces Mars back into the room).

These are the combinations I actually flag in charts. Not all 108, only the ones that repeatedly cause real symptoms.

The rashi of your 4th lord adjusts the map

The 4th house is home. Wherever the 4th lord sits, and in whichever rashi, tilts the map slightly. Quick rules I use:

• 4th lord in a fire sign (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), SE and S directions become extra sensitive, kitchen and Mars placement matter most.
• 4th lord in a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), NE, N and NW directions matter most, water sources and Moon placement dominate.
• 4th lord in an earth sign (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), SW and W get heaviest, storage and Saturn placement rule.
• 4th lord in an air sign (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), E and N carry the load, windows, ventilation and Mercury placement drive results.

9-planet remedies that match the affliction, not the room

Once you know which planet is being hurt by which direction, the remedy targets the planet. Structural demolition is almost never needed. Practical set I recommend to clients:

• Sun (E): copper vessel of water on the east window each Sunday morning, Aditya Hridaya Stotra, 108 times Om Ghrini Suryaya Namah on Sunday.
• Moon (NW): silver bowl with clean water on NW shelf, Monday fast without salt, chandra beej mantra 108 times.
• Mars (S): Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesday and Saturday, red flowers to Hanuman, avoid mirrors on the south wall.
• Mercury (N): feed green fodder to a cow on Wednesday, green plants on north wall, avoid clutter in north.
• Jupiter (NE): yellow cloth over NE altar, turmeric water in the NE pooja lota, Guru Beej Mantra on Thursday, no toilet ever in NE.
• Venus (SE): keep the kitchen spotless, camphor lamp SE evening, avoid black in SE, white flowers on Friday.
• Saturn (W): mustard oil lamp on Saturday under a Peepal, service to labourers, blue or black cloth donation, iron item in the W corner.
• Rahu (SW): keep SW heavy and closed, never leave SW empty, silver square under the bed, Rahu Beej Mantra 108 times Saturday evening.
• Ketu (centre): keep Brahmasthan open, no beam or heavy furniture at the exact centre, camphor twice daily, dog feeding on Tuesday.

Which family member gets hit, the karaka overlap

Match the Bhava karaka with the direction karaka. When both point at the same planet, that relative is the one to worry about first.

D1 planet template: signs of affliction, effects and the remedy stack

Use this as a checklist while looking at your own chart. If two or more of the affliction signs are true, treat that planet as the priority planet for both your Vastu fixes and your daily remedy routine. One planet at a time, forty days minimum, before you judge results.

Sun

Karakas: father, authority, bones, heart, right eye, career reputation. Signs of affliction: combust within 10 degrees of another planet, debilitated in Libra, sitting in the 6th, 8th or 12th, aspected by Saturn or Rahu. Life effects: father's health slides, promotions delay, low vitamin D and bone issues, and a quiet loss of confidence in front of authority figures. Vastu direction: East, if the East is blocked, cluttered or has a toilet, the Sun's effects amplify. Remedy stack: Om Ghrini Suryaya Namah, 108 times every Sunday sunrise facing East, copper vessel with water and one red flower offered to the Sun, wheat and jaggery donation on Sunday, keep the East wall clean with one window open at dawn.

Moon

Karakas: mother, mind, lungs, blood, emotional peace, guests. Signs of affliction: debilitated in Scorpio, waning close to Amavasya, in the 6th, 8th or 12th, hemmed between Rahu and Ketu, aspected by Saturn. Life effects: mother's health suffers, insomnia, mood swings, low haemoglobin, water retention, and a feeling that home never feels like home. Vastu direction: North West, a kitchen or heavy storage here burns the Moon. Remedy stack: Om Som Somaya Namah, 108 times Monday evening, silver bowl of water on the NW shelf refreshed daily, Monday fast without salt, milk and rice donation on Monday morning, no dark or red curtains in the NW room.

Mars

Karakas: younger sibling, land, muscles, blood pressure, courage, surgery. Signs of affliction: debilitated in Cancer, in the 4th, 7th, 8th (Manglik axis), aspected by Saturn or Rahu, retrograde over natal Moon. Life effects: anger you cannot control, accidents on the road, chronic acidity, blood pressure spikes, and disputes with siblings over property. Vastu direction: South, mirrors on the south wall or a bed with the head to the south throw Mars off. Remedy stack: Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesday and Saturday evening, red flowers to Hanuman, sindoor tilak to a Hanuman idol Tuesday, sweet roti to a black dog, remove any south-wall mirror facing the bed.

Mercury

Karakas: cash flow, business, communication, nerves, skin, speech, maternal uncle. Signs of affliction: combust within 4 degrees of Sun, debilitated in Pisces, in the 6th, 8th or 12th, aspected by Mars or Ketu, in a Ketu nakshatra. Life effects: cash comes and vanishes the same week, IBS and skin allergies, stammer or brain fog, business partnerships that break within a year. Vastu direction: North, clutter or a toilet in the north chokes Mercury. Remedy stack: Om Bum Budhaya Namah, 108 times Wednesday, feed green fodder to a cow on Wednesday, keep a living green plant on the north wall (not artificial), donate green moong on Wednesday, wear a copper coin in a green thread if the affliction is heavy.

Jupiter

Karakas: children, wealth stored, guru, liver, pancreas, husband in a female chart. Signs of affliction: combust, debilitated in Capricorn, in the 6th, 8th or 12th, retrograde in a dushthana, aspected by Rahu. Life effects: delayed marriage or childbirth, weight gain around the middle, diabetes risk, wealth that never accumulates, a feeling that no elder ever guided you right. Vastu direction: North East, a toilet or shoe rack in NE flushes Jupiter. Remedy stack: Om Brim Brihaspataye Namah, 108 times Thursday morning, yellow cloth over the NE altar, turmeric water in the pooja lota, chana dal and turmeric donation on Thursday, never place a bed or a broom in the NE corner.

Venus

Saturn

Life effects: chronic joint pain, dental issues, depression, career that moves at a crawl, isolation from family, and a sense that every effort takes double the time. Vastu direction: West, missing or blocked west corner, or a heavy staircase in NE, activates Saturn negatively. Rahu

Karakas: foreign, technology, addictions, sudden gains and losses, in-laws, paternal grandfather. Signs of affliction: in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th or 8th, with Sun or Moon (grahan), in Rohini or Ardra, aspected by Mars. Life effects: mystery ailments doctors cannot name, autoimmune flare-ups, obsessive thinking about one person or topic, sudden foreign travel with no ROI, mental unrest at 3 am. Vastu direction: South West, a missing SW corner, a light SW, or a toilet in SW destabilises Rahu. Ketu

Honest limitations

Vastu reduces the intensity of a chart problem, it does not erase it. When the Mahadasha or Antardasha of your afflicted planet is running, a Vastu-perfect house will still show symptoms, only softer and shorter. Do not tear down walls on Vastu advice alone, and do not skip a doctor's visit because the toilet is now in the correct direction. Vastu is one lever of many.
