Marriage Matching (Kundli) Beyond 36 Gunas: What Decides a Match
The 36-guna Ashtakoot score is a screening tool, not the final verdict, since it mainly measures Moon and Nakshatra harmony. A serious match also checks the 7th house and lord of both charts, Manglik status with cancellations, Bhakoot and Nadi cancellations, the D9 chart, and whether both people's marriage Dasha windows actually overlap.

Two couples I read for in the same month, 2019. Couple A: 32 out of 36 gunas matched. "Perfect match," everyone said. They divorced in 26 months. Couple B: 16 out of 36 gunas. Family astrologer refused the match; they eloped. Six years later they're still one of the happiest marriages in my circle. The 36-guna system is not the whole story. It's barely a chapter.
What Guna Milan actually measures
Ashtakoot Guna Milan, the "36 gunas" system, is a compatibility check based purely on the Moon sign and Nakshatra of both partners. It scores 8 factors:
- Varna (1 point), spiritual compatibility
- Vashya (2 points), mutual attraction and control
- Tara (3 points), well-being from each other's presence
- Yoni (4 points), sexual/instinctive compatibility
- Graha Maitri (5 points), mental compatibility (Moon-lord friendship)
- Gana (6 points), temperament (Deva, Manushya, Rakshasa)
- Bhakoot (7 points), family welfare, prosperity
- Nadi (8 points), health of progeny, genetic compatibility
Total: 36 points. Traditionally, 18+ is passable, 24+ is good, 32+ is excellent. But here's the thing, this whole system uses only 1 planet (Moon) from each chart. There are 8 more planets. There are 12 houses. There are 16 divisional charts. Ashtakoot ignores 95% of the astrological picture.
What proper Kundli matching actually checks
When I do a real matching for a client, I run through this checklist, in this order:
1. Manglik matching (before anything else)
Check Mars in both charts from all three reference points (Lagna, Moon, Venus). If one partner is Manglik and the other isn't, that's a red flag regardless of 36 gunas. If both are Manglik, Mangal-Mangal Yog cancellation applies and matching becomes much easier. (Full breakdown in the Manglik dosha guide.)
2. Longevity match
One of the most ignored checks. If one partner has a strong 8th house indicating long life and the other has severe afflictions to the same house, you have a widow/widower risk that no 36-guna score will warn you about. Match the Ayush (lifespan) indicators.
3. Seventh house strength, in both D1 and D9
D1 (Rasi) tells you the visible marriage. D9 (Navamsa) tells you the actual marriage - classical texts explicitly state that marriage is judged by Navamsa. Both partners' 7th house in D9 must be examined for:
- 7th house lord's dignity (own, exalted, debilitated?)
- Malefics in or aspecting the 7th house
- Venus and Jupiter's placement (marriage karakas)
- Any afflictions from Rahu-Ketu axis on 7th
4. Nadi dosha, cancellations matter
Same Nadi (either both Aadi, both Madhya, or both Antya) is the most feared dosha in Ashtakoot because it affects children's health. But it has legitimate cancellations:
- Both partners in the same rashi
- Same nakshatra but different padas
- Both Moon signs share the same lord (e.g., both Cancer and Cancer, Moon rules both)
- Nakshatras are the same but of different genders (feminine/masculine designations)
5. Financial and family houses
2nd house (family wealth), 4th (home peace), 11th (income), 12th (expenses), check both charts for major afflictions to these. A marriage where one partner has a strong 2nd/11th and the other has severely afflicted 12th will have constant money friction, even at 34/36 gunas.
6. Dasha timing overlap
Are both partners in favourable Dashas around the same time? If she's in Rahu-Saturn (a hard period) while he's in Jupiter-Venus (a smooth one), the marriage starts unbalanced. Not catastrophic, but worth planning for.
7. Ashtakoot Guna score (yes, it does matter, as one input)
Now, after the six checks above, look at the 36-guna number. It confirms or questions what you've already seen. If everything above is clean and gunas are 22+, this is a real match. If everything above is problematic and gunas are 34, ignore the gunas.
Common myths I'd like to bury
- "32/36 = perfect marriage." No. 32/36 means the Moon-based compatibility is strong. That's 1 planet out of 9.
- "Manglik + Manglik = disaster." Actually the opposite in classical texts. Mangal-Mangal Yog is one of the strongest cancellations.
- "Nadi dosha = no marriage possible." Wrong. It has real cancellations. And even without cancellation, careful family planning (medical checks, right conception timing) addresses the classical concern.
- "Only same-Rashi couples work." Nonsense. Same Rashi actually triggers Bhakoot dosha in most cases.
- "Astrology can decide the marriage." It can't. It can only show you what the terrain looks like. The walking is still yours.
Step by step: how I match two Kundlis
- Generate both birth charts with an accurate birth time and True Moon.
- Check Manglik status from Lagna, Moon and Venus for both, and apply cancellations.
- Compare the 7th house and its lord in D1, then again in the D9 Navamsa.
- Run the Ashtakoot Guna score and check Bhakoot and Nadi cancellations specifically, see the Bhakoot cancellation guide for the exact rules.
- Overlay both partners' current and upcoming Dasha windows to see if the marriage timing lines up.
- Only then look at the final guna number as a confirmation, not a verdict.
After the match: timing the wedding date
A cleared match is only half the job. Once compatibility is confirmed, the wedding date itself needs its own muhurat, check the current marriage muhurat calendar and avoid fixing a date inside a hard Antardasha for either partner. Our Kundli Milan tool runs the full checklist above automatically, Manglik, Bhakoot, Nadi, D9 and Dasha overlap, in one report.
How to do a proper matching (fast)
If you want the full check without a two-hour consultation, run both birth details through our free tools, the Kundli generator gives you both charts with D1 + D9, Manglik status, and Dasha, and the AI astrologer runs the 6-point compatibility analysis in plain English. It's not a substitute for a family astrologer you trust, but it will catch anything a rushed 36-guna printout would miss.
Is 18 out of 36 gunas a good match?
18 is the textbook minimum "passable" score, but as the two examples at the top of this article show, the number alone tells you very little. An 18-guna match with a clean 7th house in D9, no Manglik mismatch and compatible dashas can be a stronger real-life match than a 32-guna match with a damaged D9 seventh house. Always run the fuller checklist above before deciding on the guna number alone.
Can marriage happen with low guna milan score?
Yes, and it happens successfully more often than families expect. A low Ashtakoot score usually reflects a Moon-sign level mismatch, which is one input out of many. If Manglik status is compatible, the D9 seventh house is clean on both sides, and Nadi dosha (if present) has a valid cancellation, a lower guna score is not a reason to reject a match by itself.
A real example
The two couples from the opening of this piece make the point best: 32/36 gunas with incompatible Venus-Mars dignity ended in divorce, while 16/36 gunas with well-placed, mutually supportive 7th lords is still a happy marriage six years on. The guna count measured the surface, the planetary lords measured what actually mattered. Run both birth details through Kundli matching and look at the lords' strength, not only the final number.
What this can't tell you
No matching system, however detailed, can measure two people's actual communication habits, financial discipline, or in-law dynamics. Treat it as a risk filter before marriage, not a guarantee of how the marriage will be lived day to day.

Final word
36 gunas is a scoreboard. Kundli matching is the whole game. If you're about to say yes or no to a marriage based on one number, do yourself a favour, get the full picture. And remember the couple I mentioned at the top: 16 gunas, six happy years and counting. Compatibility on paper is a starting point. Compatibility in real life is a decision made every day.
