Bhakoot Dosha: Meaning, 5-9 Cancellation and Real Examples

Aashish MalikUpdated 5 October 20267 min read

Bhakoot Dosha is a zero-point flag in the 36-guna Ashtakoot matching system, triggered when both partners' Moon signs sit 2-12, 5-9 or 6-8 houses apart. It cancels when the two Rashi lords are the same planet, are mutual friends, or rule each other's signs, which happens in many of the common cases like 5-9.

What is Bhakoot Dosha, in plain words? Bhakoot dosha means the two partners' Moon signs sit at a distance considered emotionally or financially difficult in classical Kundli matching. It carries 7 points in the 36-guna Ashtakoot system, second-heaviest after Nadi. It gets flagged in maybe 1 in 4 matches I see, and about 80% of those flags have a valid classical cancellation nobody bothered to apply. The real work is in the Rashi-lord friendship logic, so before you reject a good match on Bhakoot, read this properly.

Bhakoot meaning and what it measures

Bhakoot looks at the relative position of both partners' Moon signs. It assigns 0 points (dosha) if the Moon signs sit at specific "incompatible" distances from each other:

  • 2-12 relationship, Moons are next to each other (Aries-Taurus, etc.). Financial stress.
  • 5-9 relationship, Moons are 5 signs apart. Health and progeny concerns.
  • 6-8 relationship, Moons are 6/8 apart. Traditionally the most severe, mental and health friction.

"Compatible" distances get all 7 points: 1-1 (same sign), 3-11, 4-10, 7-7. Everything else is considered mildly favourable or neutral.

Rashi-lord friendship, the logic almost nobody applies correctly

This is the part that decides whether a 6-8 or 2-12 flag is real or paper-only. Every Rashi has a ruling planet, and Vedic astrology has a fixed table of planetary friendship, enmity, and neutrality. To check a Bhakoot cancellation properly, you compare the two Rashi lords on this table, not just the sign names.

  • Natural friends: Sun-Moon, Sun-Mars, Sun-Jupiter, Moon-Mercury, Mars-Jupiter, Mars-Sun, Mercury-Venus, Jupiter-Sun, Jupiter-Moon, Jupiter-Mars, Venus-Mercury, Venus-Saturn, Saturn-Mercury, Saturn-Venus.
  • Natural enemies: Sun-Venus, Sun-Saturn, Moon has no enemies classically, Mars-Mercury, Mercury-Moon, Jupiter-Mercury, Jupiter-Venus, Venus-Sun, Venus-Moon, Saturn-Sun, Saturn-Moon, Saturn-Mars.
  • Neutral pairs: everything not listed above, for example Mercury-Mars, Moon-Saturn in some texts is treated as neutral rather than enemy depending on the school followed.

If both Rashi lords are the same planet, or are natural friends, the Bhakoot weakens significantly and most traditional astrologers will not block a marriage over it. If the two lords are enemies, the Bhakoot is likely genuine and needs a cancellation check at the Nakshatra or Navamsa level before you can safely ignore it.

5-9 Bhakoot dosha cancellation, the case people search for most

The 5-9 Bhakoot (Nav-Panchak) is one of the two milder severe types, and it is also the one with the highest chance of a genuine classical cancellation, because a same or friendly Rashi-lord pair is common at a 5-9 distance. Before assuming a 5-9 flag is final, check the two Rashi lords on the friendship table below, then check the Nakshatra lords, then check the D9. In my own case files, a clear majority of 5-9 flags cancel at either the Rashi-lord or Nakshatra-lord stage, so do not reject a match on a bare 5-9 flag without running these checks.

The four classical cancellations, applied in order

  1. Same Rashi lord, if both Moon signs are ruled by the same planet (for example Taurus and Libra, both Venus-ruled), Bhakoot cancels outright. Same lord means a shared emotional language.
  2. Friendly Rashi lords, if the two Rashi lords are natural friends per the table above (Sun-Mars, Sun-Jupiter, Moon-Mercury and so on), Bhakoot substantially weakens even if it does not fully cancel.
  3. Nakshatra lords are friends, even when the Rashi lords fight, friendship at the Nakshatra-lord level provides a real cancellation. This is the step most family astrologers skip entirely.
  4. Navamsa (D9) shows compatibility, if the D9 charts show harmonious 7th house lords for both partners, the D1 Bhakoot loses most of its practical effect on married life.
Worked example 1, cancellation applies. Bride Moon in Taurus (Venus), groom Moon in Libra (Venus). Same lord, Venus for both, so Bhakoot cancels immediately under rule one. Even though Taurus-Libra can fall in an awkward distance depending on exact degrees, the shared Rashi lord overrides it. No remedy needed here, this is a clean match on this guna.
Worked example 2, cancellation applies via friendship. Bride Moon in Aries (Mars), groom Moon in Leo (Sun). That is a 5-9 relationship. Mars and Sun are natural friends, so rule two applies, Bhakoot weakens considerably. I would check Nadi and Manglik separately, but this Bhakoot alone should not be a rejection reason.
Worked example 3, genuine Bhakoot, no cancellation. Bride in Cancer, groom in Aquarius. That is 6-8 (severe Bhakoot) at first glance. Moon in Aquarius is ruled by Saturn, Moon in Cancer is ruled by Moon. Moon and Saturn are enemies on the friendship table, so no lord-based cancellation. Checking Nakshatra lords next: Ashlesha (Mercury) and Shatabhisha (Rahu). Rahu behaves like Saturn, so still no cancellation. In this case the Bhakoot is genuine and needs the remedies below, not a shrug. This is the level of detail a real match requires, not a 5-second app verdict.

What each Bhakoot type actually indicates

  • 2-12 (Dwir-Dwadash), financial disagreements. One partner accumulates, the other spends. Manageable with clear money boundaries agreed early.
  • 5-9 (Nav-Panchak), health of children may need care, or delayed childbirth. A genuine concern, but not marriage-ending on its own.
  • 6-8 (Shad-Ashtak), emotional volatility, health scares, occasional deep crises. The most cited severe type, but even this is fixable if D9 and Manglik matching are clean.

Remedies for genuine Bhakoot

  • Vishnu Sahasranama recitation, both partners together, especially on Ekadashi.
  • Ganesh puja before the wedding, the standard obstacle-remover in Vedic ritual.
  • Feed nine unmarried girls (Kanya Puja) during Navratri, ideally in both years around the wedding.
  • Donate white items (rice, milk, sugar) on the day of the wedding itself.
  • Get the D9 (Navamsa) checked separately rather than relying on the D1 Bhakoot number alone.

What I actually tell couples

If the total guna score is above 18, Manglik is either absent or matched on both sides, and D9 is supportive, a Bhakoot flag alone should not break the match. The Ashtakoot system was designed for a world without genetic testing, dating, or shared education. Modern couples can compensate for a genuine Bhakoot with the one thing arranged marriages of the 1800s could not offer: knowing each other well before the wedding.

Booking the wedding date after Bhakoot clears

Once Bhakoot is checked and cancelled or accepted with remedies, the next question is timing. Run a full Kundli Milan so the 7th house, D9 and Dasha windows of both charts are compared together, then pick the wedding date from the current marriage muhurat calendar rather than any random "auspicious" date a relative suggests.

Run a full match

Our Kundli matching tool applies every Bhakoot cancellation automatically, including the Rashi-lord and Nakshatra-lord friendship checks, and shows you the actual strength, not just a pass/fail flag. See my full matching guide for the complete picture.

Common myths I hear about Bhakoot

  • "Bhakoot means the marriage will fail." No. It means one dimension of the 36-guna needs deeper scrutiny, most cases have valid cancellations.
  • "Only same-Rashi cancels Bhakoot." Wrong. Nakshatra-lord friendship, Nadi harmony, and Grah Maitri (planetary friendship) all count as classical cancellations.
  • "If Bhakoot fails, no puja can fix it." Traditional astrologers regularly proceed after remedial rituals when 8 or more other gunas are strong.

When you should actually consult someone

If Bhakoot is the only reason a good match is being rejected, pause. Get a full chart-vs-chart reading (D1 plus D9 for both partners, with the Rashi-lord and Nakshatra-lord friendship worked out explicitly) done by an experienced astrologer before you walk away. A one-line rejection based on a computer report is not how classical Vedic matching works.

A real example

A couple came in with a 2-12 Bhakoot (Moon signs Taurus and Pisces), told by a local Vedic astrologer it was unmatchable. On checking properly, both Moon lords (Venus and Jupiter) were friendly and well placed, a classical cancellation condition. The match went ahead, and five years on it is a stable marriage. The lesson: Bhakoot needs the lords checked, not just the sign distance. Run both birth details through Kundli matching to see the lords, not just the raw guna count.

What this can't tell you

A cancellation rule tells you the dosha is weakened on paper, it cannot promise the marriage will be easy. Compatibility still depends on values, communication and timing that no guna count captures.
