Kaal Sarp Dosha: The Real Definition, Symptoms and Remedies
Kaal Sarp Dosha forms only when all seven visible planets sit entirely on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis, with none crossing it; even one planet on the other side rules it out. It has 12 types depending on which houses Rahu and Ketu occupy, each with its own symptoms and classical remedies.

Kaal Sarp Dosha is the most feared and the most oversold defect in Indian astrology. Half the Roadside Vedic astrologers near railway stations will diagnose it in anyone who walks in. The truth is narrower: Kaal Sarp is a specific arrangement of Rahu, Ketu and every other planet between them, nothing more, nothing less. And it is not always a curse.

The exact definition
Kaal Sarp Dosha (also spelled Kaal Sarp Yog) forms when all seven visible planets(Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) sit on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis. Rahu and Ketu are always exactly 180° apart, splitting the chart in half. If every planet crowds into one of those halves, the dosha is present.
If even one planet crosses the axis, even by a fraction of a degree, it is not a full Kaal Sarp. At best it becomes a partial or Kaal Amrit Yoga, which classical texts treat very differently. So the diagnosis needs precise degrees, not eyeballing the chart.
The 12 types by house
Named by which house Rahu occupies:
- Anant Kaal Sarp (Rahu in 1st), identity struggle, delayed self-recognition
- Kulik (Rahu in 2nd), family and wealth delays
- Vasuki (Rahu in 3rd), sibling and communication issues
- Shankhapal (Rahu in 4th), home and mother-related stress
- Padma (Rahu in 5th), children, education delays
- Mahapadma (Rahu in 6th), enemies, chronic illness
- Takshak (Rahu in 7th), marriage friction
- Karkotak (Rahu in 8th), sudden events, in-law issues
- Shankhachud (Rahu in 9th), luck and dharma delays
- Ghatak (Rahu in 10th), career volatility
- Vishdhar (Rahu in 11th), gains delayed but eventually large
- Sheshnag (Rahu in 12th), foreign lands, isolation, spiritual growth
What Kaal Sarp actually feels like
In real practice: life feels one step behind. Effort gives disproportionately small returns for the first 30-40 years. Then, often after the Rahu or Ketu Mahadasha, things accelerate suddenly. Kaal Sarp people typically peak in the second half of life. Amitabh Bachchan, Sachin Tendulkar, and Dhirubhai Ambani are commonly cited full Kaal Sarp charts - hardly cursed.
Ascending vs Descending
- Udita (ascending), planets between Rahu and Ketu counter-clockwise. Struggles are more visible in early life.
- Anudita (descending), planets between Ketu and Rahu counter-clockwise. Struggles are internal, hidden, mental.
Remedies that classical texts actually endorse
- Rahu-Ketu Shanti puja at Trimbakeshwar, Kalahasti or Ujjain, one time, in the correct Muhurta. This is the only puja I recommend traveling for.
- Recite Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, 108 times daily, especially on Saturdays and during Rahu/Ketu Dashas.
- Sarpa Sukta or Nag Stotra, on Naga Panchami and Shivratri.
- Silver naga (snake) offering at Shiva temple, one time, from your own hands.
- Serve elderly and physically challenged people, this is the strongest Rahu-Ketu remedy in Kali Yuga.
What to avoid
- Any "remedy" that costs above ₹25,000 (~$301) for basic Kaal Sarp. The famous temples do the full puja for ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 (~$60–$181).
- Wearing Hessonite (Gomedh) or Cat's eye without a professional chart check, Rahu/Ketu gems backfire more than any others.
- Doing multiple remedies from multiple Vedic astrologers simultaneously. Pick one system and stick to it for 40 days.

Common myths I hear about Kaal Sarp
- "Every stuck life is Kaal Sarp." No. Kaal Sarp is a specific geometric arrangement, most "delayed success" charts don't have it.
- "You need lakhs of rupees in pujas to fix it." One classical Rahu-Ketu Shanti at Trimbakeshwar or Kalahasti is the traditional remedy. Anything beyond that is a sales pitch.
- "Kaal Sarp guarantees failure." The list of Kaal Sarp charts among top achievers is long. It changes the timing, not the ceiling.
When you should actually consult someone
If a website or WhatsApp forward diagnosed your Kaal Sarp, verify with a real astrologer using exact planetary degrees, not house-based estimates. And only take remedies from someone who can name the specific type (Anant, Takshak, etc.) and explain why that type matches your life pattern.
What are the symptoms of Kaal Sarp Dosha?
The common symptoms people describe: effort giving disproportionately small results for years, recurring obstacles right before something is about to succeed, delayed marriage or children, unexplained anxiety around Rahu or Ketu Dasha periods, and repeated dreams of snakes. None of these alone confirm Kaal Sarp Dosha, they only make it worth checking the exact planetary degrees in your chart.
How do I check Kaal Sarp Dosha in my kundli?
Generate your chart and look at where every planet sits relative to the Rahu-Ketu axis. If all seven, Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, fall on one side, it is a full Kaal Sarp. Our free Kundli tool checks this automatically with exact degrees, which removes the guesswork that causes most false diagnoses.
A real example: checking one chart step by step
Say Rahu sits in the 2nd house and Ketu in the 8th. Sun is in the 4th, Moon in the 5th, Mars in the 6th, Mercury in the 3rd, Jupiter in the 7th, Venus in the 3rd and Saturn in the 6th. All seven planets fall between Rahu and Ketu on one side of the axis, so the pattern is present. If Saturn had been in the 10th instead, one planet would sit outside the axis and the chart would not count as full Kaal Sarp, even though many people still call it that.
What this can't tell you
Kaal Sarp alone does not predict bad luck, delays or illness. The results depend on the Dasha running, the strength of the Lagna lord and the houses Rahu and Ketu occupy. Treat it as one factor in the whole chart, not a verdict.
